Cultural Community

Proposed Government Priorities

(proposed first draft - for review and comment)

  1. Public recognition and appreciation of the role, value and contributions of arts and entertainment, culture and communications in society.
  2. Participation by all cultural community associations in public policy consultations, with full representation of cultural community interests in public policy, program management and government priorities.
  3. Organization of a Culture and Communications Department to represent and manage cultural community interests in government. (Heritage, as historical term, is too narrow a term to include the entire cultural world. Artists belong to a cultural community, more than a heritage community.) A Department of Culture and Communications would serve the cultural community's interests best.
  4. Culture & Communications as a public investment, with cultural budget allocations in proportion to the contribution of culture in the economy.
  5. Simpler and faster access to government programs, public services, public information, government budgets and pubic pensions.
  6. Increasing support, grants, contributions and sponsorships, with more accessible and faster information regarding cultural funding decisions.
  7. Cultural Career Employment Programs with the goal of raising per capita incomes for amateur and professional artists in all disciplines.
  8. Cultural Community Economic Development and Cultural Tourism Programs.
  9. Cultural Community evaluations of government programs and public services. (ie. Let artists give government a score on how well it is serving cultural community interests.)
  10. Status of the Artist Legislation encompassing principles of the cultural community as a whole.
